The COVID-19 virus has ravaged the world, leaving an unprecedented impact on global politics, economy, and society. From prevention and monitoring to diagnosis, medical care, and public education, biotechnology plays an unparalleled role in pandemic prevention and response, emphasizing its significance for human civilization.
In the “Outline Development Plan for the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area” issued by the Chinese government in 2019, there is a clear focus on promoting close collaboration among high-quality medical and health resources within the Greater Bay Area. The plan aims to optimize the regional innovation environment and foster strategic emerging industries such as biopharmaceuticals, advanced medical diagnostics, and genetic testing. Each city within the Greater Bay Area has its unique advantages. In the case of Hong Kong, it excels in clinical trials, international certification, comprehensive regulations, market promotion, corporate governance, and business financing. On the other hand, the other nine cities in the Greater Bay Area have strong potential in local land resources, talent resources, academic research, and industrial capacity, which can complement each other and play a synergistic role. Furthermore, as an important development engine in the “14th Five-Year Plan,” the Greater Bay Area’s biotechnology sector will reach new milestones.
Since 2017, the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Biotechnology Alliance has been advocating for collaboration among the various stakeholders, leveraging the advantages of the “9+2” cities. The alliance has compiled a comprehensive database of nearly 20,000 biotechnology companies in the Greater Bay Area, aiming to integrate resources and promote the development of biotechnology in the Greater Bay Area. We believe that seamless collaboration among stakeholders in various aspects, including (1) government policies, (2) academic research, (3) product development, (4) industry development, (5) business investment, and (6) end users, is essential for the sustained progress of biotechnology in the Greater Bay Area. We are committed to providing an effective platform, organizing market research, seminars, forums, and exhibitions, where industry experts can brainstorm and contribute valuable insights to policy formulation. In accordance with the new vision of the “14th Five-Year Plan,” our association plans to establish a talent pool in biotechnology, coordinate the establishment of biotechnology funds, and actively cooperate with projects in biotechnology parks within the Bay Area to facilitate the interconnectedness of talents, funds, technologies, and data in the field of biotechnology. We welcome like-minded industry elites to participate in our association’s work and activities, and collectively strive to build a healthy Greater Bay Area and a healthy China.
